Heritage Painters & Restoration Specialists in Perth
Perth's character homes, from Federation cottages to Californian bungalows and inter-war villas, deserve painters who understand them. Rightway Painting & Decorating approaches heritage painting and restoration with patience, craftsmanship and respect for original features.
Older homes carry decades of paint layers, timber movement and past repairs. A rushed repaint hides problems for a season and then fails. Our approach is to assess every surface, repair what needs repairing and build a finish that protects the home for years while enhancing its character.
Restoration work
Where timber, render or plaster has deteriorated, we repair and consolidate before painting. This might mean splicing rotten sections of weatherboard, rebuilding damaged render, reinstating missing trim details or repairing cracked lath and plaster ceilings.

Preparing older surfaces properly
Heritage preparation is slower and more careful. Flaking and failing layers are removed by hand and machine sanding with dust control, sound layers are feathered back, bare timber is primed with appropriate oil or acrylic primers and gaps are caulked so water cannot get in behind the paint. Where old lead based paint may be present, we follow safe work practices.
Respecting original features
We would rather preserve than replace. Original timber, mouldings and hardware are retained wherever practical, and details are picked out in colour to show them off rather than painted flat. The result is a home that looks cared for, not modernised out of character.
Heritage colour schemes
Choosing a colour scheme for a character home means balancing period authenticity with how you live today. We can help you explore traditional palettes and trim combinations and prepare sample patches on the house so you can see how they work against the brick, roof and garden.
Genuine experience, honest advice
Jacob has nearly ten years of hands on painting experience across residential, commercial and renovation work, including older properties. We do not claim formal heritage accreditations. What we offer is careful, skilled workmanship and honest advice about what your home needs.
Frequently asked questions
Do heritage homes require special preparation?
Yes. Older surfaces usually carry many paint layers and some deterioration. Preparation involves removing failing layers, repairing timber and render, priming bare areas correctly and sealing gaps, which takes more time than a modern home.
Can original character features be preserved?
In most cases, yes. We repair and retain original timber, fretwork, mouldings and windows wherever practical and only recommend replacement when a piece is beyond repair.
How do you prepare older surfaces for painting?
We assess each surface, remove loose and flaking paint with dust controlled sanding, complete timber and render repairs, prime bare and repaired areas with the right primer and caulk gaps before applying premium topcoats.
Can you help choose heritage colours?
Yes. We can talk through traditional palettes and trim combinations and paint sample patches so you can see the scheme on the house before deciding.
